도시는 식물이다

서울의 맨 서쪽. 방화동은 어릴 적부터 내가 살던 곳이다. 개화산이 옆에 있어서인지 아니면 이름에 꽃이 들어가서 인지는 몰라도 이곳은 유독 풀과 꽃이 많았다. 다른 곳들은 누가 더 높이 올라가는지 경쟁이라도 하는 듯 쉬지 않고 높아져 갔지만, 이곳만은 그렇지 않았다.

내가 어릴 적 살던 곳은 주변보다 살짝 언덕 위에 있었다. 이곳은 해가 질 때 유난히 붉은 하늘과 길게 늘어진 화분의 그림자가 많이 보였다. 붉은 벽돌로 지어진 낮은 건물들 사이로 보이는 잡초, 화분, 나무, 그리고 그림자는 이상하게 차갑고 외로워 보였다. 사람들의 발길이 드문 곳엔 풀들이 더욱 뿌리를 깊게 내리고 줄기를 사방으로 뻗어갔다.

시간이 흘러, 영원히 변하지 않을 것 같았던 이곳도 변하기 시작했다. 하루아침에 집 앞의 오래된 빌라는 재건축이 시작되었고 이미 죽어가던 시장은 미라처럼 말라갔다. 집 앞 학교는 껍데기만 남기고 다른 곳으로 이사를 가버린 지 오래었다. 공사장은 마치 버려진 곳에서 보였던 풀들처럼 더 높이 올라가기 위해 뿌리를 뻗듯, 더 높이 올라가기 위해 지축을 흔들며 밑으로, 밑으로 땅을 파기 시작했다.

예전의 모습과 이미 변해버린 모습, 그리고 변화가 되는 과정이 이곳을 가득 채우고 있다. 마치 식물이 씨앗에서 싹을 틔우고 줄기를 뻗고, 또 가지를 내고 꽃을 피우고… 그리고 다시 땅으로 돌아가는 것처럼 그렇게 여러 삶이 모인 도시는 변화한다. 이 작은 동네에서 보이는 모습들은 식물들이 보여주는 것처럼, 거칠지만 삶이 모여 확장하고 커지고 다시 파괴되는 과정을 그대로 보여준다.

앞으로 이곳은 또 어떻게 변화하고 우리의 삶은 또 어떻게 변화할까.

The city is Plants.

The very West part of Seoul. Banghwa is the place where I’ve grown up. I’m not sure that due to the place is located from the side of Mt.Gaehwa or named the meaning of Flower blossom, the place has pretty much of flowers and grasses. Another part of Seoul has developed as higher skylines like competition. But, this place wasn’t developed as usual.

The place I’d lived in was on the hill and higher than other parts of town. When the sun went down, the place had an exceptional red sky and flowerpot’s long shadow. Through the small houses made by red bricks, the shadow of wild grasses, flower pots, and trees seemed to be cold and lonely. The plants fulfilled the space rare in the visit. And they spread the root deeper and deeper and stretched the stem on all sides.

Time goes passes and the village seemed never change begins to change. Old townhouses have been rebuilt as new buildings. And, the local market has been lost its commercial power and shrunken like mummy. The school in front of the house remained only its empty shell and moved into developing space. The construction field has started digging the ground with shaking the whole town like plants which I saw in the space rare in the visit.

This town is filled with its past, changed and the changing images like a plant; sprouting from a seed, stretching stem, blossom the flower. And returning the land eventually. The process of the city’s changing is similar to the plant’s life. The cycle of this small town’s appearance shows life’s expansion, growth, and destruction like plants.

What will the future bring for this town and our life?
